200 GOALS

Manchester United recently had a new entrant into the top goal scorers list after striker Wayne Rooney managed to score his 200th goal for the club in the 4-2 win over Bayern Leverkusen.

The German club were the visitors to Old Trafford in the first match of the Champions league group stages. United were coming into the match on the back of a poor run of form, which has seen them win only one match in the last four. Hence, there was pressure on manager David Moyes to get three points from his first Champions League group match incharge.

Rooney helped him achieve exactly that by managing to score 2 goals, which also saw him move into the elite club at Manchester United. He has now scored 200 goals for the club, which is an achievement only a handful of players can boast. He is also very close to the record held by Sir Bobby Charlton, who has 249 goals to his name. Moyes has backed the 27-year-old to break this record as well in the near future. Rooney came very close to living United in the summer after interest from Chelsea.

Mourinho also hinted that Rooney wanted to leave United because he was not happy at the club.

“The reception I got when I was substituted was amazing and meant a lot so I want to thank the fans for that. The Manchester United fans have been brilliant since the start of the season, their support home and away is always top drawer and means a lot to the team. The best way to repay the fans is with good team performances. I’m happy to be in a position where I get the opportunity to score goals – and long may that continue,” said Rooney after the Bayern Leverkusen match.
